Classical Re-Decorating With Tapestries
Most of us live in spaces that are functionally decorated – that is, a room where the primary considerations are not so much decorative as functional: we want to feel comfortable, to feel that the furniture and furnishings not only look good, but also serve our daily needs well. It's a delicate balancing act when we start to re-conceive the decor in our home with a mix of elements that will make us feel "at home" in them. That's because feeling "at home" means different things to each of us. We often want a certain feeling even though we're not quite sure exactly what that is. "Our favorite rooms welcome us like a warm fire in the hearth" says interior designer Cindy Davis. "When it comes to traditional, European style elegance, it's hard to get that feeling without a classic wall hanging tapestry" she adds.
Those of us with a particular eye for all things classical may turn to tapestries to add a unique ambiance to living, dining or bed rooms. Some set the classical mood with a large tapestry in the entryway or hall. Indeed, tapestries are like music to our eyes, greeting us like favorite friends as we enter their space.
Perhaps it's their power? After all, tapestries tend to be large and colorful, to dominate the room more than any other decor element. They often determine the entire color palate for a room, establishing firmly the primary and secondary colors which will enhance and complement all the other room furnishings, from drapes to carpet to upholstery.
Wall tapestries set the mood too! Especially if the wall tapestry is say, a pastoral, or a landscape tapestry design, with a park scene bursting with flowers and long sage-green stretches of rolling hills complete with roaming deer and a pond with architectural ruins! Or how about an Italian tapestry with its rolling Tuscan countryside, its ornate archways and pergola's ,its lush vineyard scenes, its woodsy babbling brooks and its aqua marine seascapes. The wall hanging tapestry will invite your family to relax, open a bottle of wine and chat with your friends about your last trip to Europe, South America or your last hiking trip.
Of course, there are lots of subtle things we like about tapestries too. Some love to touch them, to run their fingers over the fine wool. Others like the effect that a large tapestry has on absorbing and softening the sounds in the room. Others are constantly delighted with the changing appearance of their hand woven tapestry as the light changes throughout the day and into the evening.
"If you want to get a good feeling for what a tapestry does to a room," Davis claims, "just hang one that reflects your taste in design, size and colors, and stand back!" That's the "Wow!" effect.
But there's more! "Now wait a while, enjoy it, then imagine it not being there..Then you'll see what a difference a tapestry makes!"
Redecorating can be an adventure in rediscovering old world favorites or mixing the classics with your contemporary décor. If you're drawn to the timeless and classical, regardless whether you have a classical, traditional or contemporary environment, a wall hanging tapestry is always the right decorating choice. Davis claims that her one stop shopping is always Heirloom European Tapestries as they have the widest selection of tapestries, everything from jacquard woven to hand woven tapestries to custom tapestries.
