An Introduction to Copier Tabs
Copier tabs are plain, blank index tabs that can be printed on by using a high speed copier or laser printer. The tabs make the entire width nine inches, so they can't run through standard desktop or inkjet printers that only accommodate regular 8.5" wide paper. They come in a four basic styles are are available in various cuts and with or without trilar/mylar coating. Each tab is available in either 90lb bond paper or a slightly heavier 110lb weight. Printing templates for each is available through Microsoft Word to help you customize the tabs. Here is a summary of each of the four styles.

The most common tabs used are Single Reverse Collated Copier Tabs. They are also called SRC Copier Tabs, DocuTech Style Tabs, or Reverse Collated Copier Tabs. They come in a bank of either 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, or 10 tabs and a variety of cuts. The tabs are sold in reverse order of how they will be in your document. Available options include reinforced binding edges, hole punched or solid edges, and toner receptive trilar tabs in either clear or multicolored.

The next most common tabs are Double Reverse Collated Copier Tabs. These are similar to the first ones only each tab is doubled. They are mainly designed to be used with Xerox models 5090, 5390, and 5690 and as such are sometimes called 5090 Copier Tabs. These tabs come in banks of five and are available with or without trilar/mylar coatings or three hole punching.

Straight Collated Copier Tabs are packaged in ascending (1-2-3-4-5) order, exactly as they will appear in your finished document. They are also called Single Straight Copier Tabs, Forward Copier Tabs, and 5100 Style Copier Tabs. These tabs come in a variety of cuts, with or without trilar/mylar coating, three hole punching, or reinforced edges. They are mainly used in Xerox 5100 copiers (510xx, 58xx, and 59xx) as well as the DocuColor 40 and a few other copiers.

Finally, Uncollated Copier Tabs are also known as Single Position Tabs since each box of tabs only contains a single tab positions. These are ideal for businesses that don't use a fancy copier or laser printer to deal with multiple sets of tabs. Any tab capable machine will work with these tabs, which is often easier for smaller offices. The downside to this is the time needed to collate the finished product. Uncollated tabs are available in a variety of cuts with or without trilar/mylar coating. You can also add three hole drilling or reinforced edges to these tabs as needed.
While every style may seem similar, each has its own pros and cons. With printer and copier limitations, you may only be able to use uncollated copier tabs. Or if you have a big fancy copier designed with excellent tab capabilities and are printing a large document, double reverse collated copier tabs may work better for your purposes. Whichever you choose, the variety of options and cuts available guarantees there's a perfect set for your needs.
